Deer in Headlights (Staci Hart)

Lex is everything Dean needs — but he can’t have her.

It doesn’t matter that she’s beautiful or that her art and poetry speak to his shredded heart. She’s the new drummer’s girlfriend, the latest in a long line of drummers past. He promised the band he’d stay away to protect their record deal, so he’s left with no choice but to deny his heart for the sake of their music.

Dean is everything Lex wants — but she can’t take the risk.

When Lex meets Dean, she’s sure it’s only attraction that has her so hung up on the dark, damaged lead singer, but the more she learns about him, the more she wants him. Love has never been worth the sacrifice, until now. But she can’t put her heart on the line — she won’t — even though she wants to for the first time.

If only they knew they were just pawns in a much bigger game. And in this game of love, Aphrodite never loses.

I want to start off by saying that putting Greek Gods in modern day time sounds so amazing to me and it’s always something I will try out. Kind of like The Lightening Thief. I loved what they did with the present time and the Gods fitting into their plot lines. But with Deer in Headlights I was just left feeling like I was missing something that everyone else was picking up on. So many 4 and 5 star reviews. What am I not getting?

The nicknames and forced humor between the Gods was almost too much for me to handle. Keyword being: FORCED. Here is my thing with most romance novels: When I read them, the whole foundation of said book is how the two main characters relationship is development and structured. To me, as a reader, that is SO important. It’s how YOU fall in love with the characters and their story. It determines how well you connect with said relationship. I didn’t get that with Dean and Lex. This was a great example of how insta-love just doesn’t work for me. You don’t get to see or feel Lex and Dean fall in love. It just…happens. Within 2-3 days.

The coolest thing about this book though, the covers! All of them are magnificent. Just beautiful.

Another thing that lacked for me was the plot. The two big “omg” things that happened to these characters weren’t big at all. Swapped notebooks and an accidental tarot card reading. Hmm. It’s weird to me because there is no plot but there is still so much going on. Lots of stories being told, past and present. Between the Gods and between the humans. There are also lots of secondary characters and lots of back and forth between the Gods and Dean and Lex and Kara and Roe and Travis and back and forth and back and forth. And where am I?

All in all, it wasn’t my favorite book, I skimmed a lot of sex scenes because there plenty of them and they were redundant and repetitive but I feel like if you are wanting a quick, romance read this would be a good book for you to try out. If you want more story line, depth, and character dynamic I probably wouldn’t read it.
